Ekaterina Muromtseva: What it feels to be a part of history

21 July, 2021

Russian Art Focus met with young artist Ekaterina Muromtseva who in her recent solo exhibition “Time Difference” at XL Gallery in Moscow reflects on what it feels like to be part of history and what the genre of historical painting is today.

Ekaterina Muromtseva (b. 1990) is a Moscow-based artist who works with various media: installations, video and graphic art. She is interested in narratives where documents and artistic imagination layer on top of each other. Working with the subject of memory, she looks for new ways to talk about history.

Through her artistic practice she tries to find new forms of existence within the hierarchical social and cultural systems of society, refer to personal and collective memory and feature historical obscurities.

Muromtseva has been exhibited actively since 2015. She has had solo shows at XL Gallery at Winzavod Center for Contemporary Art, the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, the Moscow Museum of Contemporary Art, Museum of Contemporary Art in Antwerp (M HKA Museum). She has received the “Innovation” state contemporary art prize in 2020 and Fulbright fellowship in 2020-2022.
